Quality: What It Means For Clopton Clinic And You

Clopton Clinic is a volunteering participant in 3 quality programs as of winter 2007. We are looking to add yet another program in 2008. Two of these programs are ran through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) division of the U.S. Department of Health/Human Services. The PQRI and MCMP demonstration projects are programs that collect data for Medicare patients seen by Clopton Clinic involving 3 diagnosis and/or preventive care related to those disease states. The diagnosis are comprised of diabetes, coronary artery disease, and heart failure. Some of the measures we are reporting involve: was the patient's blood pressure taken at each visit, maintaining control of the blood pressure over the course of a year, performing a thorough diabetic foot exam each year, ensuring patient has seen an ophthalmologist for a diabetic eye exam each year, ensuring proper drugs for lowering lipids, beta blockers, etc are prescribed as deemed appropriate by medical protocol, monitoring of lipid control over course of year, and several other measures as well. All these measures are reported to CMS who, in turn, process the data and provide results as to how well Clopton Clinic is performing in in regards to caring for its patients. A third project Clopton Clinic participates in is the MQIC project created by our electronic medical record provider, GE Healthcare. MQIC collects data about different disease states as well as lab results, documentation of care, and outcomes and then generates reports by which our physicians can view their performance or standard of care.

These quality projects are helping our physicians to see where their care has the potential to be improved, resulting in optimal care for you, the patient. These projects are all voluntary at this point but as patients push for higher quality of care, the government is beginning to make preparations to mandate these projects for all physicians. Once again, Clopton Clinic is helping to lead the way in innovative healthcare by looking to the future, today.
