Internal Medicine Associates began as an unincorporated solo medical practice in January 1965 by O.H. Clopton M.D. Dr. Clopton was the first Internal Medicine specialist to locate and establish a practice in the Jonesboro area. The practice began on Cobb Street and after one year, moved to 505 E. Matthews.

In July 1967, Richard Burns M.D. joined the practice as a partner with Dr. Clopton. The practice continued at this level for the next several years with these physicians being able to meet the medical needs of the community.

With the growing needs and population, the practice recruited Donald Guinn M.D. and in 1976 incorporated. Shortly thereafter, Revel Porter M.D. joined the group and the growth of the new company was underway.

The expansion of Jonesboro and the surrounding community continued, as did the need for additional internal medicine physicians. Internal Medicine Associates was there to answer those continued needs. In a very short period of time, three additional providers were added to the expanding group; Ben Owens M.D., Robert Burns M.D. (son of Richard Burns M.D.), and Mark Wood M.D. all internal medicine physicians.

While Internal Medicine Associates was founded as an internal medicine group, it was recognized that the need to increase its patient services was a necessity. The corporation's first venture outside of internal medicine was in the field of pulmonology with the addition of Jeff Cohen M.D. and later Mark Sifford M.D. The next addition was in the area of gastroenterology with Jeff Stidman M.D. and Matt Garner M.D.

Interal Medicine Associates again increased its services by purchasing three family practice clinics located in Harrisburg, Marked Tree, and Trumann. Internal Medicine Associates recruited and placed three family practice physicians in each of these locations Vonda Houchin M.D., Jim Murrey M.D., and Wendy Spanos M.D. respectively.

1996 brought the addition of Demetrius Spanos M.D. in the practice of neurology, and in April of 1997 the addition of an oncology/hematology practice by recruiting Marc Monte M.D.

Internal Medicine Associates moved from the 505 E. Matthews location in 1992 to a new location at 800 S. Church Street, where it occupied the entire fourth floor, half the third floor and an office suite on the second and first floors as well as two office suites in the Keller building on Matthews.
